Man Utd 2-Fulham 1

Saturday 6th March 2004

Manchester United came from a goal down to take out Fulham 2-1 at Old Trafford on Saturday afternoon and now advance to the FA Cup semi-finals. A brace from Dutchman Ruud van Nistelrooy powered the charge for Manchester United, who came from a goal down after Steed Malbranque’s first-half penalty. The double by van Nistelrooy prevented a repeat of Fulham’s win at Old Trafford earlier this season in the premiership. The visitors from London got the first tally of the day on 23 minutes when United defender Wes Brown foolishly tackled Luis Boa Morte in the area. Steed Malbranque stepped up to the spot and blasted the shot past United keeper and American international Tim Howard. The lead was short-lived, however, as the Red Devils struck just two minutes after the Malbranque goal. Welshman Ryan Giggs raced free down the left side of the pitch and crossed the ball in for van Nistelrooy who swept the ball past his fellow countryman Edwin van der Sar. Fulham came extremely close to retaking the advantage before the half-time whistle, when Zat Knight’s powerful strike beat Howard, but struck the crossbar. The half ended with the match level at 1-1. The home team also met the woodwork on 56 minutes, when Cristiano Ronaldo curled in a brilliant free kick only to have it strike the crossbar. Despite Fulham’s brave efforts, it was the reigning EPL champions who got the decisive goal. On 62 minutes, Darren Fletcher picked out Ronaldo on the right and the Portuguese international’s brilliant cross allowed van Nistelrooy to tap the ball past van der Sar for his second goal of the game. Manchester United will play at Villa Park in the semi-finals although their opponent will not be known until the draw to be held on Monday afternoon at 1 p.m. The other semi-final venue will be United’s home ground of Old Trafford.
